But seriously though, this article was super fun to translate so I'm glad I finally managed to complete it! Syoya and Takumi get to review some really tasty-looking takeaway sushi :>

(Part 1) JO1’s Kimata Syoya and Kawanishi Takumi have a home party with high-end takeout sushi! | Real Thoughts with Kimata Sushi


This time round, we’re adopting an approach different from the usual!

This is the regular column “Real Thoughts with Kimata Sushi” by Kimaya Syoya, a member of the 11-member global boys’ group JO1. He is a man whose sushi love knows no bounds: he eats sushi 5 times a week, and the character (Chimata) he created on his own also loves sushi. This is a popular segment where he brings each of the members around to a trendy sushi restaurant. Today, we welcome the 4th guest for this segment, Kawanishi Takumi, in this special that’ll straddle the new year season!

Writeup


Ordered a whole bunch of delicious takeout sushi with Takumi-kun!


In this segment, we usually go to the trendy sushi stores in person. However, this time around we’re having a spin-off edition, and are shifting locations to the suite room of a hotel, while looking into the frontiers of takeout and delivery sushi.


Today’s guest is Kawanishi Takumi, a familiar face in the National Treasure-Level Ikemen rankings who’s had an overwhelming presence since the audition days, and whose ability to dance, sing and rap well creates performances which draw the eye.


He’s one year older (than Kimata), and it seems that within the group he’s someone who can’t talk about himself readily…? However, he has a sharp sense for witty retorts, as expected of a Kansai native, and he loves comedy! What kind of heart-to-heart talk will he have with the talkative Kima-chan?

Cross-talk


Kimata: This time round, we’ve flipped the script a little; for the sake of Takumi-kun, who loves being at home, we’ve found sushi you can enjoy at home through takeout and delivery!


Kawanishi: Uh, thank you. It’s true, I do love being at home. (laughs)


Kimata: This time round, we’ll span the end of this year and the start of next year, so it might also provide some inspiration to those who want to gather and have a sushi party (at home)! We’ve just ended our tour, too, so this would be like a little wrap party…

Kawanishi: It seems that word’s gone around that I don’t really eat sushi much, but I do actually like sushi. (laughs)


Kimata: Takumi-kun’s a man of many secrets, you see!


Kawanishi: It’s true that compared to Syoya or Mame (Mamehara Issei), my appetite’s on the smaller end of the scale, so maybe people think that I just don’t eat (sushi)? (laughs)


Kimata: It seems that people gained that impression from you only ever eating egg omelette sushi!


Kawanishi: I mean, I really love egg omelette, and when I was in elementary school I ate nothing but egg omelette (sushi)… But from middle school onwards I started eating other kinds of sushi, you know.


Kimata: When I was young, my love for sushi also started from egg omelette sushi, and then followed by tuna, and then shrimp.

We’ve come to a suite room in “sequence MIYASHITA PARK”!


Kimata: Today we’ve borrowed a suite room from the hotel “sequence MIYASHITA PARK”, and we’ll spread out all of the sushi we got across this table. This is a hotel located within Miyashita Park, and it’s my first time here! To think that there was such a fashionable suite room located on the top floor here.


Kawanishi: The view from here is amazing! You can look down on Shibuya. I can also see the spot that we filmed at for the SuperCali MV.


Kimata: Oh, you’re right! It’s the place where we were all walking together at the end!

Kawanishi: I wonder if I’ve come to Miyashita Park before.


Kimata: When we’d just barely debuted, the Louis Vuitton shop on the first floor here had just opened, and we were invited to go visit there, weren’t we. I don’t think I’ve been back (to Miyashita Park) since then.


Kawanishi: Ah, so that was at Miyashita Park.


Kimata: Woah, there’s a good quality stereo over here! I’ve been wanting a really high quality speaker to connect to my TV, you know~ There’s this thing called a “subwoofer”, and I really want a speaker with one of those! (rummages around) I’ve made a playlist that’ll suit the sushi! (plays lounge music)

Begin the sushi home party!


Kimata: Well then, we’ve got sushi that falls into three broad themes, and we’ve spread them out all over this table.


Kawanishi: Woah, amazing… Wait, for real, this regular column is amazing. Can this be considered work? (laughs)


Kimata: Truly, I kinda feel bad… Today, the other members are off doing work at various locations, but the two of us are here eating this delicious sushi.


Kawanishi: The other members would totally want to come over.


Kimata: Yeah, (Kono) Junki-kun really wants to come visit Kimata Sushi, you know. Woah, there’s so much sushi laid out on this table!! (moved) Can I take a photo of this with my smartphone and send it to Junki-kun? (laughs)


Kawanishi: Two people can’t finish eating this.


Kimata: It’s just nice for 11 people. We’ve got a shoot with all the other members later on, so I want to bring some over for them!

1. Nigiri sushi takeout from “Sushi Ginza Onodera”


Kimata: First up is sushi from the first theme, “high-class nigiri sushi takeout”. I’m so happy about this…! This is from “Sushi Ginza Onodera”, which I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time!!


Kawanishi: Is that so? Syoya, you’re really knowledgeable.


Kimata: It’s a really famous store from Ginza that has branches overseas as well, and it has received Michelin stars, too. Last year, they opened a conveyor belt sushi store in Omotesando which became a hot topic, and I’ve always thought that I’d like to go! To think I’d be able to try their sushi today. ELLE-san, thank you!

Kimata: Takeout sushi from these famous restaurants is usually in the form of futomaki (thick sushi rolls) or chirashi (chopped-up sushi ingredients on rice), and it seems that to be able to get nigiri sushi like this as takeout is pretty rare.


Kawanishi: Well, then this is a precious experience.


Kimata: I think a part of it is also due to how many restaurants pivoted to takeout during the COVID-19 pandemic, so I guess you could say that we’ve become able to enjoy sushi at home precisely because we made it through the COVID-19 pandemic!


Kawanishi: Apparently it’s 8,640 yen for 10 pieces. How luxurious…

Kimata: Well, it’s a treat for the completion of our tour. Woah, they’ve packed it really nicely, too.


Kawanishi: Ah, the sushi rice has some colour to it…?


Kimata: That’s right. Edomae-style sushi uses red sushi vinegar, so the rice would be brown in colour! Well now, I’m going to dig right in and start off with the fatty tuna belly since that’s in front of me! Through this regular column, I’ve been awakened to (the deliciousness of) tuna, you know.

Kimata: It seems that Onodera-san is also famous for thick sushi rolls (futomaki). I want to give some to the other members… Although I didn’t think Takumi-kun would eat this much sushi!


Kawanishi: Isn’t it just that I don’t give off the impression of eating sushi? I mean, I do love sea urchin and salmon roe, you know.


Kimata: Ohhhh. Those are things that a legit sushi-lover would like!


Kawanishi: That’s why I told you, that I can eat sushi! (laughs)

Kimata: Woahhh, the shrimp is really meaty. It’s even thicker than the layer of sushi rice! Super shrimpy! I bet Junki-kun’ll look at this and say “Man, I wanted to eat that~”! Recently, we got our first set of consecutive days off in a while, and I went on holiday with Junki-kun and (Yonashiro) Sho-kun to eat seafood. I said I wanted to eat oysters, and so the two of them did all the research and settled all the lodging and trains, and I didn’t have to think about anything other than eating. (laughs)


Kawanishi: And during that period, I was just staying at home the entire time. (laughs)

Kimata: I’d also usually spend my off days at home, but this time round it felt like a bit of a waste to spend (the break) alone, and I’m glad that I went for it and went (on that trip).


Kawanishi: Well, I like spending time on my own, so…

Kimata: Well then, for the egg-loving Takumi-kun, would you like to dig into this egg omelette that looks like a castella cake?


Kawanishi: (takes a bite) Hold up, it’s basically a castella cake.


Kimata: How sweet! It’s sweet like a castella cake, but the eggy flavour is strong.


Kawanishi: Yeah, the eggy flavour is strong, as expected of a sushi restaurant’s egg omelette. It’s delicious!
