(Part 2) JO1’s Kimata Syoya goes for a luxurious sushi pairing with Sato Keigo | Real Thoughts with Kimata Sushi vol. 10
This second half features a discussion on fashion!
This is the regular column “Real Thoughts with Kimata Sushi”, by Kimata Syoya of the 11-member global boys’ group JO1. Kimata Syoya, who loves sushi, will select a sushi restaurant that matches the character of one of the members, and show them around.
We bring you this second half from the Aoyama restaurant “sushi m”, where we’re joined by fashionable member Sato Keigo, for the start of the heart-to-heart talk!
~
We’re here at… Aoyama’s “sushi m”
This second half is also set in the high-class sushi restaurant in Aoyama, Tokyo, “sushi m”. The heart-to-heart talk between these two will burst forth in this store with 12 date-friendly counter seats!

Cross-talk
A heart-to-heart talk between these two, from the same hometown

Sato: You know, Syoya spoke to me a ton at the start during the audition, because we were both from Nagoya! He was the first one who struck up a conversation with me.
Kimata: Speaking of that time, Keigo-kun, you were really tall and your body was really huge back then, so you were scary… But once you look beyond that outer skin, you’re actually like a really sociable, kind older brother. I told you, “we’ve got to do our best together because we’re both from Aichi Prefecture”.
Sato: What’s more, where we lived as kids was so close to each other that we actually went to neighbouring middle schools, which I found out about later. Syoya’s (school) wasn’t famous at all so I didn’t know about it at all, though! (laughs)
Kimata: I mean, I’d never heard of the name of your (school) either, Keigo-kun! (laughs)
Sato: Within JO1, the two of us are the type to frankly speak our minds. Putting aside the question of whether our views are correct or not, we’ll just say what’s on our minds.
Kimata: When it comes to opinions, anything goes, after all.
Sato: I’m the type who’ll instantly voice out something that comes to mind. (laughs)
Kimata: Today we’re at a grown-up restaurant, so we really cleaned up well.
Sato: I was given a black suit to wear, so the jewelry really pops against it, which I think looks cool.
Kimata: It looks gorgeous!
Sato: Just like Syoya said, I like to put on jewelry and give off a gorgeous vibe.
Kimata: I’d like to have a discussion about fashion with Keigo-kun today!

They’d like to try on all types of stage outfits!
Sato: Syoya likes fashion too, so we often talk (about that). I don’t really pigeonhole myself into thinking that I have a certain type of ‘style’. Particularly for stage outfits, I’d like to try on many different types.
Kimata: Keigo-kun, quite a few of your recent stage outfits have been fairly revealing, haven’t they. I’ve had many people tell me that this part of me (points to chest) looks really nice, and so it seems like recently I’ve also been receiving more low-cut costumes that reveal the chest. (laughs)
Sato: In the summer there were quite a few outfits that showed some skin, but I don’t think it’s particularly because that’s my brand, or anything. (laughs) I wear turtlenecks, and I wear outfits that show skin, and I’m fairly tall so I wear long coats, too. I’d like to try on various types (of outfits).
Sato: A while back, I wore short-cropped jackets on stage pretty frequently because I heard that those create the look of a higher waistline and make you look stylish, but if I keep doing that then that wouldn’t be very interesting so I try out different types of clothing. Speaking of which, don’t you think we’ve been wearing jackets quite frequently, recently? It would be nice if we got to wear a different style of outfit, too.
Kimata: I get you! Like, the kind (of jacket) that’s tight-fitting and gives us a slim silhouette, right.
Sato: I’d like to introduce an element of playfulness on stage, like wearing an oversized down jacket or something. During an awards ceremony, a suit is great and all, but on stage we’ll get sweaty so I’d like to add on layers and have fun!
Kimata: It does depend on the song as well – like if we’re doing a more fast-paced song, I’d want to wear something sporty, or a slightly oversized street-style outfit.
Sato: Generally, (the staff) prepare outfits for us that suit us, but during the tour we tend to make requests of them, such as asking whether the colour looks good, or requesting particular types of accessories, or asking them to make alterations.
Kimata: Speaking of which, we really put a lot of effort into the outfits we wore for the encores.
Sato: I tend to get really excited when I first see the costumes. They reflect the concept of the songs, and that makes you excited, doesn’t it.

How much clothing do they buy each season?
Kimata: Keigo-kun, how frequently do you buy clothing?
Sato: When the seasons change I’ll end up wanting (new clothes), you know. I don’t want people to think I’m wearing the same clothes as last year, after all. (laughs)
Kimata: I’ll tend to buy things I want when I encounter them, like if I see something and think it’s good. If I don’t feel like buying anything then I won’t end up buying anything, probably.
Sato: There’s times when we get filmed in our own personal clothes as well, right? Like for social media, or for some video content… Those tend to end up being a motivator for me (to buy clothes). I’ll feel like I’m giving myself a push forwards if I buy something I’ve been wanting for a while. (laughs)
Kimata: How do you look for clothes?
Sato: I’ll check out the social media of the brands I like, and keep in mind the ones that I’m interested in… When I have time I’ll go to the shop itself to have a look, and also ask the stylists for their view, something like that.
Kimata: That’s true, when a brand you like puts out a new collection, you’d tend to find at least one thing you like within there, huh.
Sato: Also, I’m the kind of person who gets bored easily… So after I wear something a few times I’ll give the item to a friend. And then when that friend wears the clothing item, I’ll be like “Hm? That looks good. I want to wear that again.” But what do I do in times like that, I wonder. (laughs)

How do they organize your closet?
Kimata: Ah, so that’s how you rotate through your clothes, Keigo-kun! What does the inside of your closet look like?
Sato: Apart from coats and jackets, everything else is kind of just shoved inside; I don’t really sort the items.
Kimata: I have clothing racks stacked up inside of mine. So I’ll have a mountain of T-shirts, a mountain of jeans… each category of items will be stacked up in a mountain.
Sato: You don’t sort them by colour?
Kimata: Ah, I sort them by colour as well! Like blackish items, whiteish items, and so on. I have one rack for black T-shirts, one for white T-shirts, one for blue jeans, and one for grey jeans.
Sato: How respectable. I don’t sort them (by colour). I just place them into the closet according to however I feel like. Stuff I wear often, sloppy clothing, stuff I don’t wear often… that’s how I sort them. Like my first choice of clothes, and then second choice, and so on. But a piece of clothing generally only stays in the first choice category for a week or so, though. (laughs)
Kimata: How strict! (laughs)
Sato: It seems to be trendy these days to wear sloppy clothing in a stylish manner, like Hailey Bieber. Like matching a sweatshirt and sweatpants with a long coat, stuff like that. I think that kind of look is really cute. The clothes might be sloppy, but if you can carry them off in a cool manner then that’s good.
Kimata: But Keigo-kun, didn’t the clothes you wear change after you started training up your body? I feel like you’ve started to wear really tight-fitting T-shirts…
Sato: During practice I’ve noticed that I tend to wear more tank-tops and tight-fitting T-shirts, and I’ve also started to take more inspiration from foreign celebrities’ fashion. Things like the kind of styling that would suit someone with a larger frame, or purposely wearing gym clothes as every day wear, things like that. You wouldn’t get tired while on the move, which I think is good.
Kimata: When we head to the venue there’ll usually be outfits laid out, so there’s a tendency to just wear something that’s relaxed and easy to move around in (on the way to the venue).
Sato: But for me, because I get bored easily, I think this kind of job where I get to try on different types of outfits is something that really suits me. (laughs)
